Today we were confronted with a history mystery! We were told about a suitcase that had recently been discovered in an attic. We didn’t know who it belonged to or how long it had been there. Inside the suitcase were a selection of items. These included a luggage label, a ration book, some black and white photographs, three gas masks, a first aid kit, a small sewing machine, a foot warmer, a handbag containing various items and lots more!
Who did the suitcase belong to? What could we find out about the person who owned it by examining its contents? We had to think like historians and learn as much as we could from these artefacts or sources.
We began by developing our questioning skills. In groups, we filled in a question grid, including questions such as ‘Where did this person live?’ ‘Why did they leave their suitcase behind?’ and ‘How old were they?’ After this, it was time to interrogate the sources more thoroughly. We talked about how ‘interrogate’ in this context means to ‘question closely’. In groups, we viewed a selection of different artefacts and discussed them in depth.
One we had had an opportunity to examine a selection of artefacts it was time to draw all our information together. We considered all the sources and established that the suitcase contents dated back to World War 2. We discovered that the suitcase belongs to the family of our very own Ms Tipton! We invited her to join us and she answered our many questions about several of the items. It was fascinating!
